New Boathaven beach delivered to Airlie Beach. Meridien Civil Projects trucks have been delivering 58,000 tonnes of sand through much of 2008 for the newly created Boathaven Beach at the eastern end of the township of Airlie Beach. The new public beach is part of the Port of Airlie construction. Meridien say the new beach will be open by Christmas 2008.
Boathaven Beach, the Christmas present for Airlie Beach, is located on the northern side of the Port of Airlie Marina, facing Pioneer Bay. The new beach consists of 58,000 tonnes of washed, treated and ground sand from Ten Mile Creek, halfway to Bowen. The beach sand will be two metres deep when complete, which is expected just prior to Xmas 2008.
Meridien say there will be a landscaped public promenade leading to the new beach. The beach was built by civil works contractor Goldings. There will also be a new public park on the Port of Airlie headland. There may also be stinger nets, to provide year round beach access. The promenade is also the location for 15 new waterfront residential lots, already sold off the plan. The Beachside Apartments and Oceanview Apartments will also overlook the new beach, once they are built on the reclaimed sea bed.
